The σ-hole of halogen bonding
Similar to hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds (XBs) emerge from the
electrostatic interaction of an electron-depleted halogen atom and a
Lewis base. Since the electron-poor region is located on the opposite
side of the halogen's σ-bond, this region is commonly referred to as the
σ-hole. The interaction is usually weak and can only be observed in
the solid state. With a combination of X-ray and electron diffraction we
strive to elucidate the nature of this interaction. In the future, these
insights can be applied in rational drug design, tailored catalysts and
other advanced technologies.
